Charaka Samhita classifies Tagara under Sheeta Prashamana (cold-relieving herbs) and Tikta Skandha (bitter-tasting group of herbs). Tagar is katu, tikta and kashaya in taste and changes into katu after digestion. It is light and unctuous in nature, hot in potency and pacifies the three dosha.
It is beneficial in managing psychiatric disorders (Bhuta), intoxication (Mada), epilepsy (Apasmara), and toxic conditions (Visha). The herb is also employed in addressing ocular ailments (Chakshuroga), headaches (Shiroroga), blood disorders (Raktadosha) manifesting as skin diseases and bleeding disorders, and abdominal colic pain (Shoola).
