Contraindications

Ayurvedic Description

Ashwagandha in sanskrit means odour of the horse as its roots smell like horse’s urine.  In Ayurveda Ashwagandha is believed to provide the stamina of a horse; ie aphrodisiac in nature. Ashwagandha characterizes Tikta (bitter), Katu (pungent) and Madhura (sweet) rasa, Laghu (light) and Snigdha (oily) gunas. It has Ushna Virya (hot potency) and Madhura Vipaka (pungent metabolic property). It aggravates the Pitta doshas and pacifies Vata and Kapha doshas.

Ashwagandha possess characteristics including Balya(strengthening the tissues), vajikarana(improves sexual function), vrushya(aphrodisiac), rasayana(improves life expectancy) and prushtiprasada(nourishes the body). It is beneficial in conditions including respiratory, neurological, reproductive and musculoskeletal conditions.

Climate & Region

Ashwagandha is a perennial shrub and grows to a height of 1.5 metres. The leaves are ovate, elliptic and dull greenish in colour. The plant bears small bell-shaped yellow flowers that slowly turn into an orangish-red fruit on ripening.

The plant grows in semi-tropical climates with temperatures between 20°C and 35°C, but can tolerate temperatures as low as 10°C. Ashwagandha is native to the Indian subcontinent, North Africa, and the Middle East. In India, it is commercially cultivated in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, Karnataka, and Uttar Pradesh.
