Ayurvedic Description

Guduchi means “a herb that protects the body from diseases” in Sanskrit. Although the giloy stem is most commonly used in Ayurvedic formulations, its roots, leaves, barks, and leaves are also used. Guduchi has tikta and katu rasa and is sweet after digestion. It is light to digest and balances all three doshas.

Bhavaprakasha, an ancient ayurvedic treatise, has named it ‘Chiinodbhava’, meaning able to grow even if cut. This emphasizes that Guduchi is full of prana or life force, making it highly sattvic. Acharya Charaka classifies this herb as Medhya Rasayana (an herb that replenishes intellectual capabilities) and Vayasthapana (an herb that arrests aging). 

Guduchi rejuvenates the body, improves agni, and relieves thirst, burning sensation, diabetes, anemia, fever, and vomiting. It also improves vision and relieves difficulty in breathing, joint issues, and liver disorders.

Climate & Region

Tinospora cordifolia is a large, herbaceous, deciduous climbing shrub that grows about 1.0 meters tall and 0.5 meters wide. It thrives in deciduous and dry forests and prefers sandy loam soil with adequate drainage. 

Giloy is native to India, extending from the Greater Himalayas to the southern part of peninsular India. The plant is also reported to grow extensively in Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, Burma, and Sri Lanka.
