Shankhpushpi is known as the best brain tonic which is classified under four Medhya Rasayana by Acharya Charaka. Shankhpushpi characterizes Tikta, Katu and Kashaya Rasa. It shows Snigdha (oily), Sara(mobility) and Pichhila (slimy) gunas, Sheeta Virya (cold potency) and Madhura Vipaka (pungent metabolic property). It pacifies the three doshas and works more on Vata and Pitta doshas.

Shankhpushpi is a perennial plant native to India. It has arrowhead-shaped leaves and delicate bulb-shaped blue or white flowers. It often grows well in rocky and sandy environments.

It is commonly found in India, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar. In India Shankhpushpi is especially prevalent in the North Indian regions of Bihar and Madhya Pradesh.
