Ayurvedic Description
Shatavari in Sanskrit means “ the plant with hundred roots” or “one with hundred husbands” as the plant is extremely beneficial for enhancing women's health. It contains madhura and tikta rasa and sweet taste after digestion. Shatavari is heavy and unctuous in nature and cold in potency. It balances vata and pitta doshas and cools the body. Acharya Charaka classified Shatavari under the category of Balya(herbs promoting strength) and Vayasthapana(anti-aging group of herbs).
Satavari possess characteristics including stanyada(improves breast milk production), vrushya(aphrodisiac), medhya(improves intelligence), pushtida(improves nourishment) and is beneficial in conditions including blood disorders, eye diseases, and bleeding disorders. It reduces swelling, improves sperm quality and mobility and relieves infertility.
Climate & Region
Shatavari is a feathery, thorny perennial shrub with thin, striated leaves, slender stems and delicate white fragrant flowers. It also contains deep red berries and a vast network of unctuous tuberous roots. One Shatavari plant can produce up to 100 tubers.
The plant prefers well-drained, fertile clayey-loam to sandy-loam soil; it also thrives well in rocky, gravelly soils. The plant is also found growing in forests, moist places, shady places, scrubby jungles, forest borders, hilly slopes, fallow lands and plains from the coast. Shatavari plant is found in many parts of tropical India and Asia. In India it is found in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala and Punjab.
